Tokiha Mai is a young highschool girl. Together with her brother Takumi, she recieved a scholarship to attend the notable Fuuka Academy.
While on their way to their new school, the ferry they travel on suddenly becomes the battleground of two strange girls: One wields a enormous sword which is able to cut through metal and other solid materials like through butter, the other is a master with the double pistols. Things get even ticklisher when the girl with the guns materializes a wolflike robot with artillery capabilities.
This, however is only the beginning of her troubles, as Mai soon realizes she has similar supernatural capabilities and is able to create fire at will - She, too, possesses the powers of a HiME.
