Yamaoka Hyakusuke is an aspiring writer of spooky and ghastly stories. He plans to one day publish these works in an anthology known as a Hyakumonogatari. However, his life is changed forever one day when he comes across an odd trio: Mataichi the Cajoler, Ogin the Puppet Master, and Chouji the Shape-shifter. They call themselves the Ongyou, a divine group. In reality they are hired detectives that use their deviant abilities to solve cases that were forgotten in darkness. After coming across them, Hyakusuke is fascinated and follows them, to learn and to create more stories for his Hyakumonogatari.
